Information We Collect

When you visit Kinja, we may collect certain information automatically, including your IP address, browser type, operating system, referring URL, pages visited, and the date and time of your visit. This information is collected through standard web server logs and analytics tools.

We also collect technical characteristics of the device and browser you use to access Kinja. This includes details such as your device type, screen and hardware attributes, operating system, browser configuration, language and time zone settings, and similar signals. Combined, these signals form a device profile (sometimes called a "device fingerprint") that we use strictly for security purposes. See "Device and Security Information" below.

If you subscribe to our newsletter, we collect your email address. If you submit a contact form or advertising inquiry, we collect the information you provide (name, email, message content).

How We Use Your Information

We use collected information to:

  • Operate, maintain, and improve the Kinja website
  • Deliver newsletter content to subscribers
  • Respond to inquiries and support requests
  • Analyze site traffic and usage patterns
  • Prevent abuse and maintain security

Cookies and Tracking

Kinja uses essential cookies to ensure the site functions correctly. We may use analytics cookies (such as those from privacy-respecting analytics providers) to understand how visitors interact with our content. We do not sell your personal data to third parties. We do not use invasive tracking or retargeting cookies.

Device and Security Information

To protect Kinja and our readers from automated abuse, spam, and fraudulent activity, we automatically collect technical information about the devices and browsers used to access the site. This may include your device and browser type, operating system and version, screen and display attributes, hardware capabilities, installed fonts, rendering characteristics, language and time zone, network information, and your IP address. We may combine these signals into a device profile used to recognize and distinguish automated traffic from genuine readers.

We use this information solely to operate and secure the site: detecting bots and scripted traffic, preventing spam and abuse, investigating suspicious activity, and maintaining the integrity of features such as comments, submissions, and interactive tools. We do not use it for advertising, and we do not sell it. Our legal basis for this processing is our legitimate interest in keeping the platform secure. This data is access-restricted and retained in line with the periods described under "Data Retention."

Third-Party Services

Kinja is hosted on Vercel. Content may include embedded media from YouTube and other platforms, which are subject to their own privacy policies. Outbound links to third-party websites are not governed by this policy.

Data Retention

We retain server logs, analytics data, and device security profiles for up to 12 months, after which they are deleted or aggregated. Newsletter subscriber data is retained until you unsubscribe. Contact form submissions are retained for as long as necessary to respond to your inquiry.

Your Rights

You may request access to, correction of, or deletion of your personal data by contacting us at hello@kinja.com. If you are located in the European Union, you have rights under the GDPR including the right to data portability and the right to lodge a complaint with a supervisory authority.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with an updated revision date. Continued use of the site after changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
