I know a lot of NCAA Women’s basketball teams practice against male students of their respective institutions and there is a clause that anyone affiliated with the institute can participate up to a certain number of hours per week. The NFL has a rule against this in their insurance policy I think. Qualifying NFL & ex-NFL players lose their lifetime health benefits if they play in other leagues with some exceptions. Not sure about practice though.
Also, yes there is a rule (because there is never not a rule) that limits practice to full-time students with eligibility (14.1.8.1 I believe).
14.2.1.6 Exception—Former Student Participating in Practice on an Occasional Basis.
Saban and Alabama are seemingly making a point of exploiting every single loophole the NCAA allows, this is kind of like hiring Steve Sarkasian and others to be coaches who don’t actually coach (I think they have to refer to them as consultants) to get around the limits on how many coaches you can have on staff.
Considering he in’t currently on an NFL team, I can’t see why not.
Blake Sims did the same thing a few weeks ago for the Tide and Marshawn Lynch did it for Cal this year. Apparently it’s legal.
