If this had happened after Disney had finalized its purchase of 20th Century Fox, James Gunn wouldn’t have been fired. But since Comcast decides last week not to pursue its purchase of Fox, Disney will be able to successfully finalize the buyout. A deal this enormous, however, can be delayed or prevented by the racist

No jokes please, it’s the 2010s.

The problem is when you use nuance to excuse people you like, and ignore it to destroy people you don’t like. Which is ultimately the argument Cernovich and others are making, there are different rules for different people based on what side of the political divide they are on.

Huh. So, buh-bye James Gunn.

No, that’s what you think it is.

You might be, but you’re a weirdo like that. Most people are far more base in their thinking and actions (case in point, the other commenter in this thread).

I respectfully disagree. I honestly think the only thing he’s guilty of with that joke is not being very funny. Shock value jokes, while not for everyone (if they were for everyone, they wouldn’t be very shocking) are just as valid as any other type of humor. I don’t at all agree with the anyone who takes the stance

Bad, no.

Y’know what’d be fun? If our national identity wasn’t “10-year-old who FINALLY got past the login screen on AOL.”

Ah, thanks for landing on the other group of people I could choose to point to, which are people who are just fanboys/haters in general.

That’s an aspect of the culture wars I consistently choose to reject.

You’re forgetting that he’s also the screenwriter of Tromeo & Juliet and Terror Firmer (a movie where a pregnant woman has a fetus ripped from her stomach in the first 5 minutes). Those tweets aren’t so surprising considering his pre-Disney movies. You’re saying he should be punished for his jokes, so should he also

Maybe y’all shouldn’t have weaponized the internet in the first place?

but it at least proves that there are 200,000 people out there with a sense of reason and proportion

All that matters is the question, “Is Gunn a financial liability for the company if he continues to work for Disney?”

The cynic in me tends to believe that there are a whole lot of fanboys who are much more concerned with the James Gunn-created Cult of “I am Guardians of the Galaxy,” thus the signatures. If it was the guy who owned the Honda dealership down the road, methinks there would be less signatures.

Well then they have a very good point wouldn’t you say? If have a society where people get fired for tasteless jokes (see: Justine Sacco) then Gunn should have been fired. This is what the PC outrage mob have asked for.

How about we just shut down Twitter forever. And Facebook while we're at it.

The retooling killed the show, period. It was a pretty decent comedy with a unique premise before they essentially turned it into a “The Office” clone.

Some people (like me) prefer logical consistency in storytelling, while others are more interested in emotional insight, or just surface-level thrills and pleasures. None of these is the “correct” way to enjoy things, and not every show is obligated to try to meet all of these things. I’m still enjoying Westworld even
