I don’t think the author was trying to minimize the crime so much as to point out how statistically the sentence would likely have been much less if the color of his skin was different.

I’m guessing he assumed he would be found guilty regardless of what his plea was and regardless of the flimsy evidence. Pleading guilty typically avoids a trial and reduces the sentence. Judging by the way this turned out, he was probably right in his assumption.

He probably had a court appointed counsel that skimmed through his case during the 30 seconds it took for the judge to walk into the courtroom. Yes, they really are that confident and rightly so. We’ll probably get a puppet at the FBI and all Russia investigations will be closed. There will unfortunately be no special prosecutor and the GOP will likely throw a distraction until Trump says the next absolute craziest thing ever.
