I haven't read the book, but I've read another of Andrea Levy's novels and enjoyed it very much! From what I've heard the TV show does stick pretty close to the book as well. Enjoy!

I didn't mean that I had some amazing insight into it - just wanted to stress that it was my understanding of the art and that I was open to discussion as to its meaning. It's hard to convey tone in comments like these, so I thought writing 'Well actually what the artist meant was . . .' would be a bit arsey.

I so agree about the infantilisation of women. Keeps them safe and non-threatening. Hadley Freeman at the Guardian does a fashion column and often makes a really great case about how much recent women's fashion is infantilising (playsuits, hats with ears, Peter Pan collars etc).
