All that is true but what we did was play Karate. I performed katas, I learned moves, I practiced the moves and I played karate with opponents who were slightly better than I - it bored them but I learned more (and, since I 'studied' many different forms, I taught them somewhat).
In my youth, I use to 'play' karate; how else could you use karate but as play or in a real fight situation so I can see how the usage would work with tai chi
