If you want to go to the serious future realistic military conflict you should go with the original Universal Century Gundam series.

One of the best military Anime i have seen so far is Tenkyou no Alderamin or Alderamin on the Sky. It is also a lot about tactics and the hard reality and cruelness of war. And the mainprotagonist is an really interesting and likeable character who is not using might but rather itelligence.

They have been namend already but:

-Ghost In The Shell Stand Alone Complex (Two 26-episode seasons + movie)
-Hellsing Ultimate (Ten episodes)
-Mardock Scramble (Three movies)
-Last Exile (26 episodes)
-Black Lagoon (Three seasons - first two 13 episodes, third 5 episodes)

Golgo 13. There are 2 movies, and a 50-episode TV series. The TV series has more light-hearted moments and odd missions.

Gunslinger Girl!

I can’t recommend Gate enough to folks who like military stories. What it lacks in operations detail it more than makes up for in the general BS of having a mission that is opposed by your own government. Also Airstrikes against Dragons..

Alderamin on the Sky from a few months ago comes to mind. Pretty good stuff demanding a second season.

Ghost in the Shell immediately springs to mind. Mecha shows have miltary themes but aren’t really the focus I would say. If you want to take guns literally then check out Upotte. Sora no Woto was kind of like a SoL CGDCT milatary show.

Drifters just came out last season and it’s a good war themed anime, it’s by the same author as Hellsing Ultimate.
