Gender bias in academia is REAL. My wife is a (now tenured) professor who gave birth to our first during her third year teaching. She had the option to stop her clock, but didn’t. She’s a fucking all star so still got tenure on time despite not stopping the clock, but a (very) little of that had to do with the fact…
The biggest difference, to me, is that the monuments are in public and, therefore, unavoidable. That they stand allows them to almost mock those whom they offend.
I’ve not tried it personally, sadly, but I’m told the Fried Turkeys at Bojangles are amazing and you can order them ahead of time (like, way ahead). So if you are more willing to do take-out, they might be the way to go.
This - and I wasn’t even under that much scrutiny.
I assumed honor killing (as the next step), because that’s about the level of barbarianism we seem to be dealing with here.
As they should, and I often have internal issues with this. But I always go back to the fact that even the racists do not profess to be elitists like basically anyone I ever encountered in the NE (myself included - it’s taking a long time to shed...). It’s weird here, to be sure, but I generally find it to be a much…
I really think, for reasons most of us can pinpoint, things have become a lot crazier and clearer over the last few years with regard to who is racist and an asshole and who is not...
Really, I find living in CLT proper keeps you mostly protected from a lot of the country, racist riff-raff. CLT is an interesting city - lots of “city” living, but also lots of suburban spots. All in all, I like it - 2 hours from Asheville, 2 hours from Raleigh-Durham, 2 hours from the mountains - and a decidedly more…
Yeah - glad that whole debacle is... subsiding? Maybe? Who knows anymore.
Yeah... I live in CLT now and it is getting harder and harder to reconcile with what our legislation is up to at any given time.
It’s solid. Feels light on the surface most of the time but is actually pretty heavy at its core.
I’m a white guy in my mid-30s. I am significantly more afraid of ANY white guy with a gun than anyone else with a gun, ESPECIALLY in public.
I teach high school, have been since a few years before Sandy Hook (in which an alum of my high school died). One of my students mentioned the ad this morning, so I showed my speech and debate class. Didn’t watch it ahead of time. MISTAKE.
Seriously - I teach English and do the EXACT same thing. I was using Brocklehurst in Jane Eyre as a stand in for Trump just today.
Whew. I taught in one of those for a bit. Thankfully, I got fired.
This is almost the same thought process I had during this debate. I was hesitantly in Sanders corner, but I’m starting to veer more into Warren’s camp.
Maybe I’m dumb, but isn’t a bigger issue that when these people work for us, THEY SHOULD SHOW THE FUCK UP FOR WORK?!
I really enjoy this thought process. Bravo.
I’ve always complimented people on how I think their clothes/shoes/bag/whatever are cool. I’ve never not done this, it’s how I talk. I’ve also never been accused of sexual harassment. It is nice to compliment people when you like their clothes - especially as a teacher, you never know whose day you’re gonna make (or…
