If you're speaking of relationships, there comes a point in any fictional reality when will they/won't they becomes just as predictable and boring as "giving the audience what they want." It's up to a good show runner to know when that moment is. Many shows have waited too long while others have done a great job.

I LOVE Cassidy but it's not really realistic for someone to get back together with their high school sweetheart while they're still in college. I don't know anyone who has done that, but know many people married to people they met in college.
