Absolutely correct-I understand your very valid point. We do not need dogs to survive. There is a lot of things we keep around not because they are absolutely essential but because we benefit in some other way. I would argue that these benefits clearly remove those things from the realm of parasite.

I agree, and people can (and do) have very different opinions of whether having a dog is worthwhile. Just like cats, and gerbils and kids etc. But I think that is a different issue than broadly labeling a certain kind of pet a parasite. The WORST thing about getting older is when you ride all day to get to a castle looking for the Holy Grail, only for them to tell you that they already got one. Because what are you supposed to do then?
