My idiot self tried for Grand Canyon last year. You have to apply in the first hours of the first day. Ended up going backpacking in Utah near Moab and had a permit in hand within an hour of applying on any day I wanted. Much easier than going and hanging out with 5 billion people at the Grand Canyon
