Wayyyyy back in the pleistocene of internet fan sites, when you’d check Dark Horizons for scraps of movie news... the first time I got truly excited about Peter Jackson’s LOTR was the news he had cast Christopher Lee as Saruman. One of the more difficult characters was going to be done absolutely right.

I watched that “Toys That Made Us” docuseries on Netflix over the weekend and it blew my mind that it worked like that. The entire plot of the Original Transformers Movie was written so they could murder off as many transformers as possible to sell all new toys for the next sales cycle. 

All the characters with slow toy sales die.

Yeah, I get the strong impression that the vast majority of the problems with these films can be traced to a desire not to repeat the perceived mistakes of the prequels, without really understanding why the prequels failed.
