I had a 2009 Jetta TDI with DSG which I traded at 40k miles for a 2012 Passat TDI. Never had any issues with either but maybe I got out of the car right before the 42k self-destruct function activated?

Having owned three TDIs in the not-so-distant past I will say the last two (2009, 2012) had dual catalytic converters and a diesel particle filter, so I don’t see them being a greater source of pollution vs a gas engine. You could even argue the greater fuel mileage 40-50mpg meant it was burning less fuel…
