The Champions League is more like North American playoffs than the FA Cup is. You get in based on your record and play against teams from other leagues (similar to divisions) in a tournament. The FA Cup basically includes every team in England’s football pyramid, entry and seeding has little to do with your record.

I have absolutely no problem with Bertuzzi being suspended longer based on the severity of the injury.
