I'll give a +1 to the Golf. While mine isn't of the TDI variety, it shares everything else: useful cargo area, excellent road manners and balances fuel economy with sportiness quite well. I regularly do the Ottawa - Toronto route (about 500km or 4.5 hours) and I'm rarely tired or out of gas at the end of it.
