I imagine the special editions would have been better received if Lucas had focused on remastering the existing shots and updating, but not replacing, the special effects. Kind of like what CBS did with Star Trek: The Next Generation for its Blu-Ray release.
I have to say The Exorcist is the only horror movie I will not watch. Saw the movie when I was a teenager and it scared the crap out of me and could not sleep for weeks and have not attempted to watch it again. Linda Blair and the special FX people should have won Oscars for their work on that movie.
