I doubt I’ll ever be in a vehicle with a four or five point harness, but I watch a lot of dashcam stuff. I’ve got into the habit - learned from one of the Dirt Every Day guys - to cross my hands over my chest and grab the non-existent harness whenever stuff look like its going the wrong way up.

Yeah, that old guy sticking his arm out was no bueno.

Yup.  The video shows, in many cases, a vehicle of equal or larger size passing through the bollards without incident immediately before some lemon drives into them. It’s not the bollards that are the problem.

Oh my god. I’m just now realizing I haven’t driven a car with armrests since I got rid of my account’s namesake back in 2016. Fuck, those things were great.

more trustworthy news site than Fox or OAN

Your motivation for this comment is hilarious, because the same motivation is the reason for every “news” network’s incredibly long list or corrections, retractions, and defamation lawsuit settlements.

And lezbehonest nobody takes OAN seriously.

AP News even reported the suspect’s name. I think I still trust AP over Jalopnik.

lol at thinking self-driving cars will be a thing any time soon. also, at seeing them as a positive.

It was interesting to see both Ford (with the new Escape) and Jeep (with the new Wagoneer and Grand Cherokee) talk about bigger windows, lower beltline, and better overall outward visibility. Someone is listening.

Wow, seeing that blind spot illustration shows exactly what I was experiencing.  And the low speed of it being in the school zone seemed to make it worse.  When school zone wasn’t ineffect the roads where 45 and 25 MPH.  That made sure that if someone started in your blind spot by the time you got to the intersection

when your right hand has work to do.”

How do we thin pillars, lower the cowl, and enlarge the windows? In other words, how do we bring back excellent outward visibility? I would pay money for that.

Yeah, I was talking more about the heavier structure going under the whole safety umbrella. I like to think there is a middle ground between shit from the 60's and 70's that would disintegrate on contact, and the insane pillar thickness we have now. ASM and airbags probably save thousands of lives a year on their own,

Probably not as much as you think. Most of the tech involved is relatively light weight. Between the sensors and extra powerful CPU, we’re talking about an extra 25lbs max. The older vehicles were lighter, sure, but that extra weight we have now is because of more sound deadening and heavier structure for crash

It’s the parents fault if their kid gets hit by a car. Full stop. Teach them to pay attention like their lives depend on it (because it does) or don’t let them be in situations to get hit by cars.

Stated otherwise:  Can you imagine how much money we cold save on Gas if we rolled back safety standards to 90's levels?

Cool, so we’re going to have way more expensive, heavy, flaky cars with more distracted drivers “in control” of them. Swell. Just swell.

As long as the coins keep flowing, never.

Not soon enough!
