I think this is a common gender issue. After all, it’s the plot behind 75% of sitcom mishaps: woman wants to vent, man assumes she wants him to problem solve, he tries to fix the damage despite not fully understanding the situation, chaos ensues.

I hear you. Even if nothing changes, sometimes it helps just to know that the right person knows. :) And audience definitely matters. “Venting” to one person can feel like dwelling, and with another, it feels cathartic and useful.
