For what it might be worth, my experience with airlines and hotels is that if you are a rewards member (in some capacity or another), they can be slightly more lenient in regards to cancellations or rebookings.

I’ve been burned by this in the past.

FWIW, in perpetual terror that my fluffy, four-legged roommate was going to have some accident that I wouldn’t have enough in my savings to cover, I got a CareCredit card just for her.

That actually does make me feel a bit better, though a bit guilty that my relief comes at the expense of the suffering from people trying to buy a home ten years from now.

I was all set to buy last year, then ended up changing jobs, putting that on hold.
