Did I miss it, or has AV Club not commented on Shane MacGowan’s passing?

I know I’m a little late to the party, but did the tree have frosty branches at the end? I read it as a not to his frost giant origins.

I’m also not sure Friends ‘ripped off’ Living Single. LS premiered in Aug of ‘93, and Friends was already being pitched as early as Oct ‘93, which wouldn’t make ripping it off impossible, but unlikely. Marta Kauffman’s talked about how much of the early eps were based on her own experiences, and Crane and Kauffman had

Sounds awesome - I would have loved to see them back then. I saw them open for Bush in ‘96 and had a meet and greet. Asked Johnny why they hadn’t played any songs of Hold Me Up, and he said they just weren’t doing that album on that tour. Total bummer.

I absolutely love Prince’s version, but I think I agree with you - the GGD/Diamond version has so much spirit to it.

They’re close in a lot of ways, but Frehley’s delivery somehow combines loconic and assertive in a way that the tripped out original doesn’t pull off. And the backup vocals and overall mix of his version are miles better. But yeah, the structure’s pretty much the same.

This reads like Ray Green’s version of the Jerk Store comeback.

There’s a difference between laugh tracks (which people have long hated, like on MASH), and a live studio audience ... which often adds to the vibe of the show. For example, watch some old episodes of The Jeffersons and listen to/watch the way the audience reactions interact with the on-stage performances. It’s a

It’s not a laugh track, it’s a live studio audience.

Very few sitcoms have ten seasons.

Yes to the Replacements!

Hear, hear!

Their version of “Mother Popcorn” from Live! Bootleg.

I’m a gen-x rock dude who likes jazz and old-timey music and never would’ve thought I’d like a TS song. But when I first heard “Trouble” (from the album Red), which has been mentioned, it really hooked me - I like the original version better than “Taylor’s version,” but both are good.

I thought that might be it, but it must be something more like both “criminal” and “recent” because several of those on the list had their own run-ins with the law over the years, including arrests and convictions.

It’s interesting that on both this list and the previous one on stand-up specials they’ve left off Cosby and Louis CK. I’m not at all suggesting those guys need their reputations rehabilitated, or even, really, that they need to be on these lists. But if they’re going to include the racist and homophobic stuff of the

No love for Guy Maddin?

Same - didn’t see it four times, but twice in the arthouse (also long gone). Really good, hard film.

For example, Shawshank Redemption is fine and all that, but In the Bedroom is not only a better movie, it’s a better Maine movie in so many ways.
