I should also point out that Voltz Supreme, the host of said podcast, is a fan of Masashi Hamazu, but also a super talented musician and composer in his own right. He has a few episodes on Hamazu’s work, which is incredibly varied.

Thanks for sharing! I haven’t had much interest in the remake (It may be because I’m old, and the original marked the point where I lost interest in the series’ over-the-top melodrama), but these are good tunes.
Man, that original music is creepy! I’m digging both versions of the soundtrack, but I always get uncomfortable when a remake changes the emotional tone of a piece. “Flamelurker” is a good example; it almost feels like Hemstapat either didn’t get what Kida was doing with the juxtaposition, or the higher-ups didn’t.
I’m digging the music! I’d be digging it even more if “Decision” didn’t open with the chord progression of “3 Blind Mice”.
Yeah, this OST is one hell of a thing. One of my favorite modern game soundtracks to be sure. Lena Raine is an absolute beast. Melodies, harmonies, sound design, and a masterful sense of groove (in percussion and otherwise). Strengths: All. Weaknesses: None. The last boss of VGM. And the game ain’t half bad either ;)
My wife is from the East Coast and lived in Brooklyn for a number of years. She’s gotten used to Portland........but she still hates the lack of snow in winter.
Have you heard of the History of Byzantium podcast? It’s crazy good in unique ways from the History of Rome. Worth a listen. I also like the History of Bulgaria podcast, but I’m a geek that way.
WHA
Also glad to see this! I never once had any interest in the CD-I. The word “interactive” was enough to know the system wasn’t for kids who liked to have fun. It’s only been the last few years that I’ve been finding out there was some great music to be heard.
I totally forgot about this one! Thanks for the reminder!
Thanks for sharing your nostalgia, and you win my vote for best alias of the day. Alis and Rolf would be proud.
Glad I could help bring the music back to you!
I understand....A good buddy of mine shares my love of movie composers. We even dig most of the same ones. But he read the article today and his takeaway was that somebody needed to redo the music with ‘real instruments’. To each their own!
Thanks for sharing the memories! One thing I wanted to share but couldn’t fit into the article was the scene in the middle of the game with the girl who turns into a monster in the cave, and then runs back to the village to “apologize”.....when you get back, everyone is injured or dying. That was the earliest memory…
Treasure Land Adventure is fine. Devilish/Bad Omen is fantastic, composed by god-tier Hitoshi Sakimoto....or at least he created the Terpsichorean drivers. I always get confused as to which Mega Drive games Sakimoto composed and which were composed by his co-composer Masaharu Iwata. But the MD games they worked on are…
I can’t argue with you; Prairie is one of my very favorite Genesis tracks ever! Pure, unadulterated aggression. I gotta say though, I can’t put just one OST at the top.....there are just too many excellent ones. My own favorites overall are probably Revenge of Shinobi and Herzog Zwei. I was fortunate enough to be a…
To my shame, I spelled vermilion incorrectly when pitching the idea, and I knew how to spell it!
done.
I miss Morning Music!
I really miss Morning Music.
