The first, and maybe only time I played Soul Edge was in an arcade in Iceland. By that time, I’d already played Virtua Fighter 2 and Tekken in both the arcades and at home, so seeing a 30fps, standard resolution fighting game didn’t grab me.
Some of these are nice. Death Frontier reminds me a bit of music from the Panzer Dragoon games.
Well, this certainly captures the mood around the PNW right about now. I’d be inclined to reciprocate with a link of the Genesis or Sega CD versions of Dune, but I’ll go here: Herzog Zwei. One of the progenitors of the RTS genre, it was inspiration for Westwood Studios’ creation of Command and conquer and Dune. And…
Whoohoo!
I work construction in downtown Portland. It’s not fun right now.
Good tunes here! Out of curiosity, will Alexandra Hall continue to contribute to Morning Music?
Oh yeah, I just saw that a week or two ago! It played havoc with my nostalgia, so I ran and hid in the Herzog Zwei Soundtrack until it was safe. 😁
Nice tunes!
A dangerous request! Japanese game melodies during this early era were crafted with a very busy mentality. The main melodic lines often keep sustaining notes no longer than a quarter note, and even more rare is any melody where there’s any empty space between notes. The melodies really excite the mind, but they’re…
Morning! Short tracks, but I love ‘em. Especially BGM#2. Tanaka seems to leave a little more breathing room in his melodies than Kondo, and it makes a difference.
I wasn’t hearing it.....then at about 6:44. That def sounds like FM to me. Wow!
From about day one, I used the headphone out of the Genesis to plug into the hand-me-down 70's stereo I had in my room. I spent so many hours just cranking sound tests through those old speakers.
*LAUGH*
As for me personally, I prefer the Genesis percussion to the PC-88 version. It’s more muffled, but it’s so distinctive. So yeah, nostalgia. Plus, the FM on the YM2612 is just a little smoother on RoS. It helps the instruments to blend better, sounding more cohesive. And for some reason, the snares on the PC-88 sound…
EFF YES! I cannot tell you how much everything about this game means to me. Seeing early pics for The Super Shinobi way back in the EGM Video Game Buyer’s Guide immediately made me decide to graduate from a Master System fanatic to a Genesis fanatic. Hearing the music at my friend’s house was the first time I realized…
Okay, that is way better than I remember it being. Thanks for the perspective correction on this one, Alexandra “Space Jazz” Hall!
You’re blowing my mind, Rayce Archer! I’ve never heard about the FM channel on the PCE. Do you know of any games that use this? I’m also curious about these creepy voices you’re talking about, can you give me any examples of this?
The PCE sound hardware didn’t have any FM capabilities whatsoever, but the rest of your observations are spot-on. My favorite feature of the chip compared to the NES is its ability do stereo panning (hard left, hard right, or both channels, just like the Genesis, Gameboy, and most arcade setups of the day). It really…
Now THAT’s how to start a work week!
