Shit, look at what's happening in North Carolina. The voters elected a Dem governor, so the outgoing Repub governor - in collusion with the Repub state legislature - is frantically scrabbling to strip away as much power from the governor as possible. And he'll probably get away with it, because why wouldn't he?
