I thought the WWI setting mostly worked, because of its well-earned reputation as a horrifyingly pointless and devastating war. It makes it the perfect counterpoint for Wonder Woman’s absurd good humor and love and all that sweet stuff.

It’s funny the different reactions that over-the-top scene in Wonder Woman can provoke. For me, the appropriation of that First World War trope for a superhero Crowning Moment of Awesome just made my brain start screaming ‘WRONG WRONG WRONG’.

...Except originally, he was the Son of Fu Manchu! back when Marvel had the rights to the Sax Rohmer character / walking racist trope. They now no longer refer to Shang-Chi’s father by that name, but it’s an interesting history to address/rewrite in a film with a Chinese protagonist.

Hey, at least Lowe went along with all the mockery of his reputation! I kind of liked that the movie made him a scumbag who likes banging women significantly younger than him, and he just steered right into the skid.

I honestly think the sequel is more enjoyable even if it’s clearly a lesser film. Wayne’s World is far more interested in being just kind of strange than being a laugh a minute, but it’s got the feel for its 90's-rock-losers-surrounded-by-exploiters milieu DOWN, almost like Blues Brothers did for the feel of the world…

Wayne’s World is a perfect movie. Every scene is funny and full of random flourishes (multiple endings), cinematic devices (focus pulls) and vignettes (Garth drum solo) that is clearly the work of an incredible director. There’s a reason why the sequel wasn’t nearly as good.
