I’m watching the creation of concepts for what is easily one my my least favorite BMW designs (seriously, what did the GT ever do better than a Touring?), yet I’m awestruck at the true skill and artistry involved in everything. To have that much patience and concentration is just amazing, it really is.

I’m sure they could’ve gotten similar or even better numbers with less capacity and cylinders.

I couldn’t agree more.

Interestingly, the 316i over here was a 1.8l 8 valve, while the 318i was also a 1.8l, but a 16 valver.

Hate to be that guy, but the “i” I think stood for injection (at least originally, though these days that’s probably redundant anyway).

I got curious and thought I’d compare the differences between the E63 and E63 S, but doesn’t seem like Merc is selling a common-garden E63 at the moment, is this correct?

True. I guess the same argument could be made for anything above the cheapest, most basic car available meeting certain criteria (safety, space, economy, reliability etc.).

I don’t know man. I mean, there is definitely something odd going on over at BMW, and I have my share of gripes with their line-up of today (“GT” 5 doors, 4 door “coupes” (though admittedly they do look good), and fastback SUVs being my personal biggest sticking points).

I dunno, small(ish) car with oodles of power and RWD? Sounds pretty good to me, though I expect the price to be astronomical sadly. If they could sell a metric crapton of this, I might just be able to pick one up in say, oh, 15 years or so on the cheap.

Yeah, 6 paragraphs was probably way too many lol.

“Jelopnik”...

If she didn’t say she doesn’t like Taylor as a singer or dancer or person or whatever, I’d have agreed with you. She didn’t say that though, she just specified one thing about Taylor that she does like, maybe there are other facets she likes or maybe that’s the only thing about Taylor she likes, but she didn’t

I don’t know if I’m onboard with the whole turboed downsizing thing, especially when it comes to V12s. Sure, people can argue about better fuel consumption, but we all hopefully know that the official figures and real-world figures do not reflect the same result.

This is what confuses me about this whole situation: Why does the CLS still exist at all any more? That was supposed to be the tarted up, more special E Class, wasn’t it? Except now you won’t be able to get a CLS63 any more, but you can still get an E63.

I personally reckon Richard Hammond was on to something with “Coupaloon”.

Bad naming back in 1962, bad naming in the year of our lord 2018. ...That is a nice Rover though.

I think that we all need to take a moment and realize that we are now living in a world where Range Rover -the very same Range Rover that is known primarily for their SUVs- better grasps the concept of the word “Coupe” than either Mercedes or BMW does.

Interesting about the new CLS topping out at the 53 AMG, had no idea they’re going with that. Whatever the case might be though, the naming convention is totally nonsensical to me.

The “Coupe” in the Gran Coupe name still puts me off and it will never not put me off, but this car looks pretty freaking sweet. Also, are my eyes betraying me or are the normally aluminium-or-chrome accents replaced with a gold-ish looking substance?

I just want to know the proportions of this car. Is it another E Class offshoot? Because if it is, it’s getting a bit ridiculous...
