I read it as the gun fell out of his pants during the struggle.  Which is plenty of reason to run. You can get rid of all sorts of crimes, but having a gun as a felon is the easiest way to end up doing a lot of time.

I think it would have zero effect whatsoever when it comes to his religious supporters. He already has many strikes against him with the Christian right morally and Evangelicals are amazingly willing to turn on even other Republicans at his word, even ones with no obvious moral failings.(To the Christian Right.)
