How many different ways can we sell the Golf? Sure the GTI is a fun sporty car, but is still Front Wheel Drive Golf. Nissan, Toyota, Mazda, Ford, Chevy, Hyundai, Dodge all have a rear wheel drive coupe, that even in base form is fun to drive. VW has a torque steering Golf.

I have less of an issue with TR7s, but it always strikes me as cheapening cars with genuine character, like old Jags. Especially the E-Type.
