If only.

I really don't understand why everyone is mad about how "unnecessary" it is. It's a part of the narrative that's tertiary, like you said. You don't have to read it if you don't want to, but if you're invested enough in the story, it's there for you. It's not like the movies are going to revolve around this plot point.
