I can imagine there might be smaller stars if they somehow had a higher metalicity. I’m imagining some scenario where the star condenses due to pressures from a high-metal super-nova passing through a metal-rich nebula. Or maybe swallowing some passing terrestrial objects. The gas shell could fuse with a heavy core.

If the moon were to simply disappear, that would be another question. Let’s say, like a stupid Dr. Who episode, it was a giant space moth egg and it hatched and flew away.
