Do you know what never seems to work? A graph placing the box office numbers against critical response. Super heroes don't work! Look at Fantastic four! Super hero movies work! Look at avengers! There's no discussion about how tight scripts and good directing make box office. It's like genres happen in a vacuum.

There's a couple of things that I always think about with the birds of paradise. 1, that they evolved from bird that were basically crows, and needed to be showier than the jungle, and 2, there's no evidence dinosaurs weren't as showy, odd, or lovely with their feathers.
