Transferring money via PayPal and other similar online means usually incurs a fee. Checks are free (at least at my bank), and I don't like paying for stuff I can get for free, just as a general rule.

But if everyone had to pay, it wouldn't be as information-rich, because not everyone would pony up. It would open the door for someone else to offer a free service that would take its place. Twitter is not that complicated, from a technical standpoint.
Some websites are 100% flash, and don't have a mobile version. Sad, but true. I've come across restaurant sites, photography sites, etc. that I wouldn't have been able to view on my phone without flash.
