In your browser's url bar, type in a website name like "gizmodo" and then hit Ctrl+enter. It will wrap the site name in www. and .com and navigate there. Ctrl+shift+enter will do .org.
The side-loaded apps that stick out are Swype beta and the Amazon appstore (paid apps for free). There are others but those are the ones that are a big deal to me.
The android marketplace is not loaded with them. The article you linked to talks about how some hacked websites (not the market) might be able to get you to install malware (that requires your approval), that might allow the attackers to compromise your data.

I will remain unconcerned about these "threats" until either an article is published by a source that doesn't stand to profit from it, or there is a significant malware outbreak in the real world. I don't think either of those things have happened to my knowledge. Until then, Android anti-virus apps are just bloatware…
