I don’t know that I can agree it’s inherently hypocritical. Being able to push a button or turn a dial is certainly simpler to a lot of people than having to dig through settings menus in order to do the same thing. So I’d argue it definitely depends on the specific cars we’re comparing in that case and how things are

I’m with you on that. Even as someone who isn’t really bothered by having everything on the touch screen, wheels/dials for certain quick actions is my preference.

Agreed, nothing beats true black.

I would definitely welcome a night mode, this is low hanging fruit. Screen dimming has been a thing for a long time now. And personally, dark > light backgrounds 10/10.

Yeah, and I honestly think there needs to be some sort of regulation around this. At the very least these cars will need routine security updates, and I’d really rather not leave that sort of support up to each individual manufacturer. It’s one thing for phones which are only kept about 3-4 years, It’s something else

This is just a matter of personal preference, ulimately. I don’t know that you can say someone is objectively right or wrong for liking or disliking the look. Personally, I like RR’s approach the most so far.

I get that the long-term idea is to remove human failings/behavior from the picture entirely, but we’re not there yet. But that being said, even if BMW removed all their screens it’s not like smartphones would stop existing or something.

Maybe it’s just me, but I never really understood why people get bent out of shape on aesthetics vs how any given person treats others. Unless we’re saying attire = how you treat other people which isn’t a leap I’m comfortable making.

You know what, I’m glad you can be real with yourself. When the day comes that you breathe your last, absolutely nobody is going to genuinely care that you had an (in their eyes) gaudy car shifter. Embrace what you love!

There seems to be some kind of fairly large misunderstanding here. I was talking about wages and power structures, I don’t have an issue with the underlying idea behind Lyft and Uber my dude. I thought that was obvious, but I guess that’s my bad for not explicitly saying that.

The craziest thing is to see ordinary men and women arguing in favor of pushing wages down, or saying that if a company isn’t paying its workers a living wage that’s the company’s fault. That idea, that 40 hours of work is worth a living wage, has somehow become controversial in recent years. It’s especially maddening

I can’t help but be highly suspicious of people who enthusiastically argue in favor of the status quo. That’s usually either coming from people who benefit from the way things are, or someone with a case of survivorship bias. Well, either that or someone parroting something they hear from political and media leaders

You might start seeing characters with backgrounds as automotive software engineers pop up in movies, especially if we do transition to BEVs one day. It’ll be interesting to see how the movies change with the times.

That may be part of it. But, if it’s worth anything the people I know in my age group (or younger) who don’t have a car/aren’t into cars made that decision for financial reasons. And frankly, it’s just not necessary when you live in/near most cities.

> nothing opens up your angry rant to derision like failing to do any basic research before posting it, then mocking the things you didn’t understand.

Evolutionary forces and cultural practices kind of screwed women over in that regard. At least a gun is usually pretty effecctive in getting people to back off, if you’re comfortable with that.

I mean, most high end cars are full of features you don’t really need and nobody was clamoring for. Go make some hand gestures in a modern BMW for a while.

Considering Renault hasn’t sold cars here for nearly 30 years and they’re afraid to return, I don’t foresee that being much of an issue.

I guess this comes down to how often you drive hundreds of miles at a time. I don’t think most people do that more than a handful of times a year at most, but if you do so once a month or something I can see how that would be more of an issue.

Hating Musk is pretty much a requirement for using Jalopnik, seemingly. There are absolutely valid reasons to criticize some decisions he’s made, and I’d frankly agree with a lot of those to varying degrees. But, personal *hatred* for him is something I don’t really get.
