My younger sister was in the passenger seat of a car that struck and killed a pedestrian (he suddenly walked in front of the car from the sidewalk in our suburban town) when she was a teenager. It was very traumatic for all the girls involved, and I don’t think she’s been the same since.

Interesting theory, but like you said I’m not sure if I buy that — sometimes it’s just played for laughs or in non horror movies! National Lampoon, Stranger Things, Grand Budapest Hotel, that new Netflix show End Of The Fucking World, The Magicians, etc etc etc. It’s gut wrenching every time!
