I was near St. Gallen, so there wasn’t any french, all German as it was the Konstanz region with Germany and Austria just a short train ride away.

Fair enough, basically the VZ router is also doing some sort of multicast magic for IPTV if you have that. The Edgerouter can handle the protocols needed to pass the TV data if you’re interested, tell VZ you want to upgrade your network and their system is holding you back.

It is possible to replace the Fios gateway... you just have to know your networking protocols when you plug in the replacement. The ONT (Fiber demarc unit) can provide Ethernet connectivity as well as Coax for the tv. If VZ says otherwise, they’re not telling the truth.

There’s a big difference between signal and throughput.
You could have amazing signal, but no good throughput due to the mesh topology being at the two edges of the original AP.

Hardwire where you can with access points, that is the best course of action.
