Personally, I go with: I don’t eat something with a central nervous system. Of course that leaves a few types of animals, like most jellyfish, but it covers the most ground with a single description that I can come up with.

Yes, please... I’ve had to conversation with a friend why she’s not a vegetarian while she was eating scallops. Want to eat scallops? Fine, eat the hell out of those foul things (seriously, even the smell turns my stomach; I’ve always felt that way, long before I finally went vegetarian nearly 2 decades ago), but

she’s vegetarian, but she’ll eat fish

They understand how reservations work, but think that the word revolves around them and that the normal rules don’t apply.

Yes, yes there are people that stupid. I’ve met “vegans” that swore to hell and back that they were vegan, yet ate shellfish. On the other end of the spectrum, I’ve encountered men who refused to eat a salad with their steak because “they’re not vegetarian.”
