What exactly is the joke? What am I supposed to be laughing at?

Superior? No. It makes me feel sad that you think being a shitty person is somehow hardwired, and therefore you have no incentive to try to change.

I don’t make hateful jokes at the expense of marginalized groups, no, and neither do any of my friends. That you seem to think this behavior is “biological” (whatever the fuck that means) says more about you and the people you hang out with than it does about humanity in general.

I’m going to repeat the same thing I’ve said to everyone else who’ve suggested that the joke is on the deceased: I don’t personally get that interpretation from the text. You’re welcome to it. But surely you can also see how many people are getting the opposite reading. It’s not exactly obvious.

The issue at hand is a “joke” about a man so ashamed at having a sexual experience with a transwoman (or just a cisman, sure, the joke is a little unclear)…

Here’s how to figure out which way is “up” in comedy: Is the group you’re making fun of marginalized, and are you making fun of them in a way that further marginalizes them? Then don’t make fun of them. You don’t need to be a genius, just a non-shitty person.

I guess you could reach that interpretation. To me, though, the “joke” is pretty straightforward: Man has sex with transvestite/transwoman and kills himself out of shame. I just don’t see anything in the text to support an ironic or “meta” reading.

Can we please not do the “well it could mean this, it could mean this, it could mean this, you don’t know” nonsense? Read the text. It’s about a dude who’s so ashamed of having sex with a person he perceives to be a man that he kills himself, and it’s played for laughs. Sure, you could choose to read it as homophobic…

This joke’s punchline is literally “haha, people would rather kill themselves than sleep with a freak like you.” You’ll forgive me if that goes a little further than “being able to laugh at yourself.”

Well, yeah. Now many more people are seeing Obsidian’s shitty, hateful joke and they are (rightfully) embarrassed. Daylight is the best disinfectant.

Cool straw man and everything, but I don’t think anyone’s saying they couldn’t play the game. Just that the joke was shitty and offensive and reflects poorly on the developers.
