Depends on the system. The big stuff 3 on my current big block ford does it internally on the subaru I left my laptop connected to the obd2 port and had a usb wideband and when I hit the defrost button it started logging. And after logging/ watching the gauge you learn to hear/feel knock and lean spots.

If you understand how an engine works, it’s not rocket science get a subaru or an evo and get on one of the open source tuning forums... There is a wealth of knowledge on there you just need to know who to trust and who to run from.
