He also said in an interview with Elvis Mitchell that the characters who don’t speak (Sally Hawkins, fishdude) are the only ones who are clear in what they want and stand by their principles. The talking characters are almost all lying and duplicitous to some degree. They speak but they don’t know how to communicate.
