And the rumor mill says his camp leaked it to distract from the feud with the Khan’s. Wonder how that fits into the “will not exploit women” part of the pledge...

Functions and formulas and whatnot are confusing, especially in a world where complex math is meaningless.

She sounded so genuinly grateful that it was just made me :)

1. Local grocery stores usually deliver if you spend more than like $50 and shopping carts aren’t bad once you get used to them. (I was absolutely floored that I couldn’t buy one in Boulder ‘cause they’re such a staple here.).

and it sounds like Johan is the personification of those fears.

There are a fair amount of boarded up/condemned brownstones up in Harlem, even with all the gentrification. so not terribly surprising.

I was giving exams through blackboard and couldn’t get IT to lock to that site, otherwise would have. But honestly homework via stack overflow isn’t that bad, he’ll it takes some understanding to get it to work in your code...the issues I was facing were more of the hand in classmate’s code and maybe change variable

My undergrad was engineering and the cheating was so rampent and blatant that I’m still kinda amazed things don’t blow up/collapse/kill people more often. Was thrilled when a friend didn’t get valedictorian ‘cause I dunno that he ever earned an honest grade; kinda frustrated me that he got an NSF ‘cause he also wasn’t

One of the founders of Intel (Andy Grove) gave a ton of money to the engineering school at CCNY (where Michelle Obama gave her last Commencment Address), from which he graduated back in 1960. CCNY is the sort of “right college” with a diverse pipeline.

I have mixed feelings about this ‘cause I think it mostly depends on which group in the dev department you’re trying to get slotted into. Like algorithms or scalability? Yeah...you need that CS background. UX? Unless you went to Maryland or CMU or the like, I almost feel like it’ll hurt as much as help. Testing? Great

It is crazy expensive to live there which can also make it inaccessible to some/many new grads.

I’m so sad that he left cause he was great at calling out stuff. On the plus side, he left cause he graduated and got a postdoc.

Sorry, I wouldn’t even know how to evaluate since I’m a white girl.

My fellowship director used “she was nervous” as a potential reason for turning me down. It was another student on the admissions committee, who was from a similar academic background to me (one which is very different from the background of the fellowship director and many of the students in it) who championed me

It is a pipeline problem...Facebook’s pipeline is notoriously elitist.

Reach out to the local public university system, ‘specially if it has community colleges, and ask to speak to their outreach & prof development and career center people. They likely work with the population you’re interested in and therefore can maybe give you good feedback.

Apparently it’s also rare for a librarian to be LOC, so she’s kinda making inroads there too.

Ugh double post via laggy Internet.

Podcasts are great for building up financial literacy. I learn a ton from Planet Money, Freakonomics, and Marketplace...honestly probably more than I did from taking AP macroeconomics in high school.

That’s already the case in much of Israel (like even grocery stores) and it’s mostly something you just get used to.
