Virginia is a purple state. Due to the economy of the DC metro area, Northern VA (including Reston VA) is very, very blue. While all the senators/governors are Democratic, the state offices are mostly Republican.

If you are talking about sponsoring family members for permanent residency, this can take a long time if you are not an immediate family member. It can take 10+ years for non-immediate family members (like your adult sibling).
