The zephyr wasn't a bad car, just not as nice as it should have been. All it was though, was a re-badged Fusion with nice fancy leather and optional ass coolers.

IIRC, rotaries like to flood upon shut down and start up. On a few videos on youtube that show how to care for a rotary you got to spin them up pretty high and then sut them down to spew any fuel out of the chambers, so lots of raw fuel (as rotary's are thirsty motors) + red hot manifold = fire.
