For people replacing parts for function and not out of an obsession with ‘period / vehicle correct’ harware, how difficult is it to replace a wiper motor with something new? Are the manufacturers so different for relatively ‘commodity’ items like those that there is no ‘generic’ alternative that will work just fine?…

As I understand it, yes, but you can use other parts as well. I saw one self-repair that swapped touch-disks (haptic sensors???) for joy cons sticks - you lose the ability to use the sensors to scan Amiibos, but if you dont care about those, might be an interesting swap.

You can buy replacement joystick kits for less if you are ok trying to fix them yourself. I will be giving it a shot in the near future. Smash Bros and BOTW suck when playing with drift.
