All that ceremony and artifice makes it so there is real meaning when someone like The Honky Tonk Man decides to step out of his character and tell you exactly what kind of motherfucker Hulk Hogan is.

“NOT A PENALTY!” – Robert Kraft

I actually agree with all of this. The rules are the rules and have been the rules.

“I’ve got some thoughts.” – Josh Gordon

You’re showing a severe American bias here. The NCAA is not only not on FIFA’s level, it’s not even within a mile of the same ladder when it comes to being a bad organization.

None of this has anything to do with my point. My point was that this is not a new rule, it is simply super-strict enforcement of an ages-old Law of the Game.™ To say that these keepers have to play by new rules is incorrect; they have to modify their behavior to be within the rules they should have been obeying for

I’m saying that all the on-field referee does is watch the footage and make her decision.  She’s not “using” technology; she’s just interpreting the footage that is being shown to her.  So her level of experience with using it shouldn’t be too much of a hindrance, right?

lol “among”

Goalkeepers who’ve trained all their lives to defend spot kicks under one set of rules have had to totally adjust their approach before the biggest tournament of their lives after being given barely any notice.

In soccer notation it would actually be Billy 13-0 Deadspin Readers.

it’ll take at least four more years for Canada to have anything to actually celebrate

Counterpoint: there’s no such thing as a “good PowerPoint.”

Well, he wasn’t gonna walk into it himself.

MMA is now tainted forever.

I mean yeah, catching it seemed unlikely, but there’s more to goalkeeping than catching it. The ability to punch it out and block it from becoming a goal is important, and I can see an argument that said ability was impeded. But again, only upon slow-motion replay, and not in real time. This is not a clear and obvious

After 6.1 IP, 12 appearances and 43 batters faced, he managed to get 19 outs, five strikeouts, 15 walks, five HBP, five wild pitches, and allowed eight hits and 16 earned runs with a 22.74 ERA and 21 ERA+.

Looking at the clip, the only thing I can think of is that Gauvin interfered with the keeper’s ability to make a play on the ball. The keeper was there first – barely – so the foul goes against the striker. Vice versa, and it’s a penalty.

Oh well, guess we’re out of the World Cup because the world’s shittiest referee missed two handballs

I’m fully expecting games two through four of the series to be postponed after tonight’s game ends 1-0 on Thursday afternoon after 46 innings.
