True, there is the possibility that John is lying to Sadie like he’s been lying to everyone else. But I tend to think he’s telling the truth. First, Sadie already knows John’s past and his status as a wanted fugitive, so he doesn’t have to make up an identity to explain why he’s out of work and has no money. And…

He mentions trying his hand at prospecting and failing when he reunites with Sadie Adler in the Valentine saloon. Sort of an offhand comment while they’re catching up on what they’ve been doing over the past 6 years. He ever says outright that he went bankrupt in the process, but it makes the most sense to me.

I think the idea with Arthur’s cash (as well as the sack of money from the Army payroll he gave Tilly) is that John spent it all on his failed attempt at prospecting in the Yukon that happened between the end of chapter 6 and the beginning of the epilogue.

Well yeah, the fanfare is supposed to be when John puts on his original outfit from the first Red Dead. That’s meant to be the big fanservice reveal of the first part of the epilogue.
