Ugh, I can’t even. I was just talking on Facebook last night about all this. The Trumpkins could not be reasoned with. One lady was like “No one cared about these monuments and statues for the past 150 years.” When I told people how most of this was all created during the Jim Crow era, I was ignored.

It is important to remember, that in the proper historical context, the Confederacy was a moral abomination and everybody knew it. It’s not like people didn’t know slavery was wrong. They simply chose to practice it anyway.

Germany —under the Nazis— decided that they were a superior race, and that they should conquer all of Europe and capture, enslave and/or exterminate all people inferior to their Germanic awesomeness.

There may be many ways for local communities to address that challenge; though removing offensive statues may be the most straightforward, in some cases communities may prefer to add historical context and explanation.

The mere fact that not one Republican, since Nixon started using dog-whistle politics to capture the votes of bigots, has had the foresight to imagine a Trump like creature rising up and taking over their party - is a testimony of the absolute craven immorality of their ideology.

I’d love to think that all of these guys have had a change of heart, but it seems more likely that what they’re actually objecting to is the kind of racism that tarnished the Republican brand.
