I couldn’t agree more, although I feel like only so much of the entire population is sane and rational.

I accept that some people have different beliefs than me but white supremacist ideology is inherently violent and misguided. Statutes commemorating white men who fought to preserve the enslavement of others is not really something any decent person should be willing to compromise on.

I just read that NC erected one in the last decade. This is purely about racists being racists and feeling good about their racist past, present and future. Also here’s some info I think is useful:

This is even more obvious when you consider that many of them were erected, not after the civil war, but in response to various civil rights demonstrations throughout the early and mid 1900's as a blatent threat to African Americans and promise to stay committed to white supremacy.

Ironically, this new version of the statue is a more accurate representation of the historical Confederacy, at least before the end of Reconstruction.

Wouldn’t it also make sense to rid public spaces of monuments and/or depictions of anyone who owned slaves and/or supported slavery? took up arms against The United States of America to preserve the institution of slavery?

It was vandalism when it was erected. This was corrective action.

I wonder if the mayor is secretly relieved that they don’t have to confront this issue head on with this particular statue now. They can just say it will be fixed and postpone it indefinitely. Politically, it’s the easy way out.

Yeah, fuck this guy. That statue wasn’t going anywhere until the demonstrators took it down. I’d love to see some more statues forcibly removed/destroyed since the NC General Assembly went ahead and made fucking hoops to jump through before any of them could be removed legally.
