If simp were an abbreviation of simpleton, there would be no debate over whether or not Archie is a simp. The boy is dumb. 

I first heard it explained with the acronym before this recent online popularity. It’s always used as a pejorative for men who are perceived as being overly obsequious or beholden to unworthy women with the hope of being rewarded with sex. It’s the same as the contemporary usage of cuck or the idea of the friend-zone.
