Thank you for writing this. I’m a musician and played in marching band (in high school only) and really feel for these folks. Hopefully a student-organized rally can help heal some of the damage.

What are the benefits associated with being in one of these bands? Are there scholarships, etc.? I ask because I’m wondering what repercussions these kids would face if instead of actually playing their instruments at the next game, they simply walked out or collectively took a knee or something.

As a band kid, these stories terrify me. We’ve been yelled at by opposing fans after losing one bowl game, which was scary enough at the time, but I’ve been lucky enough to never deal with it escalating like this.

Sounds like Columbo, but it’s really 3 humanities professors who got suckered into being on the committee. I’m sure their combined expertise in Renaissance poetry, critical theories of ethnicity, and semiotics will get to the bottom of this quickly and efficiently.

Feels like a case where the few people with any power got together, laughed a little at the band geeks not being able to take some good old joshing around, and chalked it all up to “Boys will be boys and maybe this will help those nerds get some thicker skin.”
