This is operating under the assumption that “service charge” means tip. The manager can just say that the service charge is meant to represent the additional cost of labor and supply for a large party. The manager can say whatever he wants.

Yeah, people really don’t get how lax shit like food safety and labor and taxes are at restaurants.  Reminds me of that column the other month where the manager was reusing bread.  People were saying they should call the health department without realizing how useless the health department is

Be careful when leaving credit card tips at ethnic restaurants. Most of the owners I know gladly add those to their revenue. That’s why whenever I go to an Arab or Desi place I tip cash.

I support this. The homeless will come in and panhandle to the customers.

This makes me think about a funny aspect of tipping. It encourages the server to work against the house. To give freebies to the customers or to give advice that may reflect poorly on the restaurant.  If getting the best tip means giving the customer the best experience, that may work against the interest of the owner

We could end the electoral college. We could make Puerto Rico and Washington, D.C. states. We could end the filibuster. We could add justices to the Supreme Court. We could more serious action on gerrymandering.

Small talk is not, personally, my schtick.  But it works.  Regardless of all the posters who claim to hate it

If they come at you right away it’s likely corporate policy.  Secret shoppers make sure you ask how the food is after two bites or two minutes.  We get bad reviews if we don’t ask

Yeah, I’ve learned how to say little things like hello, thank you, and goodbye in a lot of different languages. Goes a long way (assuming said foreigners have been here long enough to understand what a good tip is... thankfully Japanese people are pretty good about that, even if they don’t have tipping in Japan)

Make small talk.  It’s exhausting but that’s what does it.  One of our servers is absolutely terrible, she’ll let dirty dishes pile up on the customer’s table (and won’t take the hint when they stack them for her and put them on the edge of the table), lets food sit forever under the heat lamp, be completely AWOL…
